Parking Signs & Curb Colors Guide
A comprehensive guide to understanding curb markings, hourly restrictions, and municipal traffic control guidelines across the United States.
Regional Rules & Local Variations Notice
Federal guidelines from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) recommend standard street signs, but curb color coding is not standardized at the federal level. Curb paint meanings and legal enforcement depend entirely on state vehicle codes and municipal ordinances:
- California: Employs a highly standardized curb color system (CVC Section 21458) where red, yellow, white, green, and blue carry strict statewide legal meanings.
- New York (NYC): Does not recognize standard curb color codes for parking enforcement. Yellow or red curb paint is often unofficial or is used solely near fire hydrants. Parking rules are determined 100% by posted signs rather than paint.
- Texas & Other States: Defer to municipal striping codes. While colored curbs are used as helpful visual guides in cities like Dallas or Houston, they must be accompanied by official signage to be legally enforceable.
Red Curb: No Parking, Stopping, or Standing
Absolutely no stopping, standing, or parking is allowed at any time. Typically reserved for fire lanes, transit lanes, and safety zones near intersections.
Yellow Curb: Commercial Loading Zone
Reserved for commercial vehicles loading or unloading materials. Passenger vehicles can stop briefly to drop off or pick up passengers, provided the driver remains with the vehicle.
Green Curb: Short-Term Time-Limited Parking
Indicates parking is restricted to a very short duration (commonly 10, 15, 20, or 30 minutes) during business hours.
Blue Curb: Disabled Access Parking Only
Exclusively reserved for vehicles displaying a valid disabled placard or license plate. Enforced 24/7 in all states.
White Curb: Passenger Loading & Unloading Only
Reserved exclusively for dropping off or picking up passengers. The driver must stay with the vehicle.
